North Schuylkill Jr./Sr. High School honored some of its most accomplished students Monday morning during the inaugural Spartan Breakfast Bowl of Champions, a special recognition event celebrating extraordinary achievements in athletics, academics, and extracurricular activities during the 2025–2026 winter season.
The event was held in the school’s LGI Room and recognized 19 students whose accomplishments ranged from state-level athletic achievements to academic and extracurricular excellence.
Principal Ken Roseberry said the idea behind the event was to create a more focused way to celebrate students who went above and beyond in their respective fields.
“We do a lot of things like pep rallies and celebrations, but sometimes we end up recognizing everybody,” Roseberry said. “This was about identifying the best of the best - students who did something extraordinary beyond winning a county title or placing at districts.”
Roseberry said the school hopes the Breakfast Bowl of Champions will become a seasonal tradition, recognizing standout Spartans at the end of each sports season.
Among those honored were Luke Miller, the state champion in the 60-meter dash, state-qualifying wrestlers Cadyn McGraw and Gaige Mentusky, swimmers who set school records, All-Area basketball players, robotics students heading to state competition, and top performers in music and academics.
Each honoree was featured on a custom-designed cereal box inspired by the classic “Wheaties champion” covers, printed in large poster format and displayed throughout the event space.
The display created what school leaders described as a “gallery of champions,” giving each student a visual tribute to their accomplishments.
“We’re going to hang these posters in the cafeteria for everyone to see,” Roseberry told students during the event. “Not to embarrass you, but to promote you and celebrate what you’ve accomplished.”
Roseberry also shared a quote from legendary football coach Vince Lombardi that he said reflected the spirit of the event.
“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen endeavor,” Roseberry said. “Whatever you choose to do, do it greatly.”
Senior Luke Miller, who captured a state title in track this winter, said it was an honor to be recognized alongside other high-achieving students.
“It’s pretty cool being here with all these people - the wrestlers, the robotics team, basketball players - all the champions,” Miller said. “It just shows how many great things are happening at North Schuylkill.”
With his high school career nearing its conclusion, Miller said discipline and consistency have been key to his success.
“You might not see results right away,” he said. “Just stay consistent, keep working hard, and trust the process.”
Senior wrestlers Cadyn McGraw and Gaige Mentusky were also recognized after competing at the PIAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey, both qualifying for the state tournament for the first time.
“It was surreal,” Mentusky said of stepping onto the arena floor. “You look around and realize you’re wrestling with some of the best kids in the country.”
McGraw said representing North Schuylkill on the state stage meant a great deal given the school’s long tradition of wrestling success.
“It’s pretty cool with the history of the program,” McGraw said. “We’ve always had a good team and good coaches. Being seniors and captains and going to states together was special.”
Both wrestlers credited the program’s coaching staff and upperclassmen mentors for helping them reach that level.
For younger athletes hoping to follow in their footsteps, they shared a simple message.
“You have to put the work in,” McGraw said. “Practice is hard, but anything worth doing is going to be hard.”
