Emergency personnel from Schuylkill County are assisting at the scene of a large fire in Mount Carmel, Northumberland County, Sunday night.
Around 8:20 p.m., Schuylkill County units were dispatched to 113 South Spruce Street in Mount Carmel for a second-alarm commercial building fire.
The structure involved was a former lumber company.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions, with flames rapidly spreading through the building. Due to the intensity of the blaze, crews were forced to shift to a defensive attack as the roof collapsed and the entire structure became fully engulfed.
Following the roof collapse, flames were reported to be reaching as high as 50 feet into the air.
Firefighters also concentrated efforts on protecting nearby homes and structures from the spreading flames.
As of this posting, there is no word on the cause of the fire or any injuries. Firefighters are expected to remain on scene into the early hours of Monday.
Responding from Schuylkill County were units from Ashland, Girardville, Englewood, Lavelle, Ringtown, Gordon, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, and Sheppton. Units assisted with fire suppression, RIT, and the tanker fill site.
Units from Minersville and Porter Township also responded to Mount Carmel and Kulpmont on move up assignments.
