Schuylkill County Treasurer Appointed Ashland Borough Tax Collector; Residents Raise Concerns Over Payment Location

The Schuylkill County Treasurer has been appointed as the new tax collector for Ashland Borough, following a series of developments that left the position unfilled at the local level.
The change comes after the individual elected to serve as tax collector in the 2025 General Election moved out of the borough prior to assuming the role, creating a vacancy. Borough council then opened a search for a replacement and identified a candidate willing to take on the position.

However, that candidate requested to operate out of Ashland Borough Hall. Council denied the request, and the individual ultimately resigned before officially taking the position.

With no local candidate in place, borough officials turned the matter over to the county, resulting in the Schuylkill County Treasurer’s Office assuming responsibility for tax collection duties.

The decision has sparked frustration among some Ashland residents. Those wishing to pay their taxes in person must now travel to the Schuylkill County Courthouse in Pottsville, rather than handling payments within the borough.

It is unclear if borough officials plan to revisit the position locally in the future or if the county will continue to handle collections on a long-term basis.

Real estate tax bills were mailed out this week. The discount payment period is in effect through May 20, with the face payment deadline set for July 20.

Borough residents reported receiving their bills on Monday.
