Illegal Dumping Cases Rise in West Mahanoy Township; Multiple Citations Filed

Township officials are reporting a recent increase in illegal dumping incidents, particularly along State Route 924 and in the Village of Raven Run, prompting enforcement action and increased surveillance.

According to West Mahanoy Township Police Chief Matthew P. Williams, a total of six non-traffic citations have been filed in Magisterial District Court 21-3-05 in Shenandoah in connection with the incidents.

The alleged individuals cited include:

State Route 924 North:

  • Vanelzia Andujar, Florida Avenue, Shenandoah
  • Elie Nova, South Jardin Street, Shenandoah
  • Fiord De Lopez, South Cedar Street, Hazleton

Village of Raven Run:

  • Jonathan Santos, East Centre Street, Shenandoah
  • Fasuto Acosta, North Vine Street, Hazleton
  • Angel Gonzalez, North Lehigh Avenue, Frackville

Police say the charges stem from violations of Pennsylvania law regarding the illegal disposal of waste.

Under Pennsylvania Title 18, Section 6501 (Scattering Rubbish), it is illegal to deposit waste materials—including household trash, refuse, or other debris—on roadways, private property, or into waterways without proper authorization.

A first offense is classified as a summary offense and may result in a fine ranging from $50 to $300. Offenders may also be required to perform between five and 30 hours of community service involving litter cleanup, face up to 90 days in jail, or a combination of penalties.

In response to the uptick in activity, West Mahanoy Township has installed multiple trail cameras in targeted areas to monitor for further violations. Officials are also urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the West Mahanoy Township Police Department.

Township officials say enforcement efforts will continue as they work to address the issue and keep the community clean.
