Students with special needs and disabilities from across Schuylkill County gathered once again at Schuylkill Haven Area High School for the district’s annual “Hurricane Hop,” a celebration focused on inclusion, connection, and fun.
Now in its seventh year, the event is organized by the Schuylkill Haven Area School District’s Life Skills Program and continues to grow as a highlight of the school year. The dance brings together students of all abilities, along with peer buddies and volunteers, in an environment designed to promote friendship and community.
This year’s theme, “Back to the ’80s,” added a nostalgic twist, with students dressing up and enjoying music and decorations inspired by the decade. The Schuylkill Haven gymnasium was transformed into a lively space filled with dancing, laughter, and themed activities.
The event was made possible through strong community support. Remember When Video provided a photo booth, giving attendees the chance to capture memories throughout the day, while A. Farr Photography donated her time to professionally document the event.
Additional support came from a variety of local businesses and organizations, including Wawa, Boyer's Food Markets, Guers Dairy, Redner's Markets, Mystic Screen Printing, and the East Ward Social Club, along with proceeds from dress-down days and T-shirt sales within the school district.
Students from the Schuylkill Technology Center also contributed to the day by preparing and serving lunch for attendees, helping to keep the celebration going.
Adding to the excitement, Eric Sellin of the Llewellyn area brought his DeLorean, modeled after the iconic vehicle from Back to the Future, giving students a unique photo opportunity that tied in perfectly with the event’s theme.
In total, more than 250 students, peer buddies, and volunteers attended the Hurricane Hop, making this year’s event another successful celebration of inclusion and community spirit in Schuylkill County.
