Southern Columbia's Jim Roth Encourages North Schuylkill Students to Pursue Lasting Excellence

North Schuylkill Jr./Sr. High School recognized some of its most accomplished students Friday morning during the Spring Spartan Breakfast Bowl of Champions, a celebration of excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, and extracurricular achievement.

The event honored students who distinguished themselves throughout the 2025-2026 school year and spring season, while also challenging them to continue striving for success in the future.

The featured speaker was legendary Southern Columbia head football coach Jim Roth, whose career includes more than 500 victories and 15 state championships. Roth, Pennsylvania's all-time winningest high school football coach, spoke to students about what it takes to sustain excellence over a lifetime.

Roth reminded students that while they were being recognized for their achievements, their accomplishments should be viewed as a starting point rather than a finish line.

"Whatever point you're at, whether you're a seventh grader, junior, senior, ready to graduate and go to college, you've had success. That's why you're here," Roth told the audience. "But the most important thing to realize is that this isn't the finish line, it's a starting point for you."

Throughout his remarks, Roth emphasized the importance of setting goals and maintaining a clear vision for the future. He encouraged students to develop both long-term and short-term visions for their lives, explaining that success rarely happens by accident.

Drawing from his experience building Southern Columbia into one of the nation's premier high school football programs, Roth explained how vision played a key role in transforming a team that once endured a 27-game losing streak into a perennial state championship contender. He said success begins when individuals can clearly picture where they want to go and commit themselves to the work required to get there.

Roth also challenged students to step outside their comfort zones, saying personal growth occurs when people are willing to embrace difficult tasks and unfamiliar challenges.

"Growth lives outside your comfort zone," Roth said while encouraging students to seek opportunities that push them to improve.

Another major theme of his speech was resilience. Roth noted that even the most successful individuals experience setbacks and failures.

"We all fail. We all get knocked down," he said. "The most important thing is how do you respond to that and how do you react when you do experience failure?"

Roth stressed that setbacks should be viewed as opportunities to learn and improve rather than reasons to quit.

He also highlighted the importance of humility, warning students not to become satisfied with past accomplishments. According to Roth, maintaining a humble attitude allows people to continue learning, growing, and reaching higher levels of success.

Perhaps his strongest message centered on avoiding complacency.

Roth told students that becoming comfortable with past success can quickly derail future achievements. Instead, he encouraged them to stay focused, continue setting goals, and remain committed to improvement.

In closing, Roth shared the simple philosophy that has guided Southern Columbia's football program for decades.

"I always can sum it up with one phrase: We just try to do the right thing," Roth said. "As long as you continue to choose the right things and do the right thing, you're going to be successful."

Following Roth's remarks, North Schuylkill recognized dozens of students whose accomplishments exemplified the standard of excellence celebrated during the Breakfast Bowl of Champions.
