The Knights of Columbus Council 618 recognized two outstanding local students Saturday morning as recipients of the Knights of Columbus Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded this year in honor of Dr. Stanley G. Rakowsky.
The scholarships were presented to Lucero Zavala Perez and Relles Barcenas, both members of Divine Mercy Parish, in recognition of their academic achievements, service to their parish communities, and dedication to their faith.
Lucero Zavala Perez has been actively involved in parish life at Divine Mercy Parish, serving as a lector for the Spanish Mass and participating in CCD religious education programs.
A student at Shenandoah Valley High School, Perez has participated in Concert Band, Marching Band, Soccer, Cross Country, and Student Council. She also serves as President of the National Honor Society and has been recognized as Shenandoah Valley’s Female Scholar Athlete.
Perez said her Catholic faith has helped shape her values of humility and kindness and that she hopes to continue strengthening her relationship with God while pursuing higher education. She plans to study biology at either Penn State Schuylkill, Kutztown University, or Holy Family University before ultimately attending dental school.
Also receiving the scholarship was Relles Barcenas, who serves as a CCD religious education teacher at Divine Mercy Parish and volunteers with the Diocese of Allentown food truck ministry, helping provide meals to those in need.
At Marian Catholic High School, Barcenas has been involved in the Immaculate Heart Society and FBLA. She has also earned the President’s Award for Academic Achievement while maintaining perfect attendance.
Barcenas described her Catholic faith as the foundation of her identity and aspirations, guiding her to serve others with compassion and purpose. She plans to attend Immaculata University to pursue a degree in nursing.
The annual scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership, community service, and commitment to their Catholic faith.
