Congressman Dan Meuser announced his support last week for the Fiscal Year 2027 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, a spending bill that includes $1.6 million for renovations to the Schuylkill County Courthouse.
The legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives on a narrow 213-210 vote and now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
Among the local projects included in the bill is funding to address several infrastructure needs at the historic Schuylkill County Courthouse in Pottsville. The $1.6 million Community Funded Project will be used to modernize three elevators, replace aging exterior doors and windows, install new rooftop HVAC units, add temperature-monitoring sensors to improve energy efficiency, and repair retaining walls surrounding the courthouse.
Meuser said the legislation provides support for American agriculture while also investing in rural communities and critical local projects.
"With the passage of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, House Republicans are delivering on our promise to put American farmers, ranchers, and rural communities first," Meuser said. "This legislation delivers nutrition assistance to those who need it most, protects our food supply and American farmland from foreign interference, and provides funding for renovations to the historic Schuylkill County Courthouse."
The bill fully funds major federal nutrition programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and Summer Food Programs.
It also includes funding for agricultural research and safety programs, allocating $1.1 billion for the Farm Service Agency, $1.226 billion for the Food Safety and Inspection Service, $1.642 billion for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and $1.795 billion for the Agricultural Research Service.
In addition, the legislation provides $3.81 billion for rural development programs, including support for homeownership and infrastructure lending, as well as $40 million for the ReConnect Rural Broadband Program.
The measure also includes provisions aimed at protecting America's food supply chain by adding the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), allowing increased scrutiny of foreign transactions involving agricultural land, biotechnology, transportation, storage, and food processing.
Schuylkill County officials welcomed the courthouse funding.
"Thank you to Congressman Meuser and his staff for working with the County to secure funding for much-needed repairs to the courthouse," said Schuylkill County Commissioners Chairman Larry Padora. "These improvements address critical infrastructure needs while helping ease the financial burden on local taxpayers."
Commissioner Barron Hetherington said the funding will help preserve one of the county's most recognizable landmarks.
"We are fortunate to have a gorgeous, majestic courthouse with a one-of-a-kind clock tour," Hetherington said. "While our administration has worked diligently to maintain the building, critical upgrades to the windows and HVAC system have become increasingly urgent."
Commissioner Gary Hess also praised the funding, noting the courthouse's importance to county residents.
"The courthouse is an old, historic building, and I have always said that it is the people's house," Hess said. "It is our responsibility to ensure that it remains well-maintained and operating smoothly, not only for the residents we serve today but for future generations as well."
If approved by the Senate and signed into law, the funding would help preserve and modernize the courthouse while ensuring it remains functional for county government operations and public services for years to come.
