Flood Watch Issued for Schuylkill County as Heavy Rain Threatens Flash Flooding Through Tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Schuylkill County and several surrounding counties as multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to move across the region through late Tuesday night.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight for Schuylkill, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties.

Forecasters say flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

According to the National Weather Service, several rounds of slow-moving and occasionally training showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day and into the evening. Some storms could produce rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, increasing the risk of rapid runoff and localized flooding.

Areas of greatest concern include:

• Small streams and creeks
• Urban and poor drainage locations
• Low-lying roads
• Flood-prone areas near waterways

Residents are urged to remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the day. Motorists should never attempt to drive through flooded roadways, as the depth of water can be difficult to determine and road surfaces may be washed out beneath the water.

The Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flash flooding to develop, but flooding is not yet occurring. Additional watches, warnings, or advisories may be issued if storms intensify or flooding begins.
