The upcoming events feature authors, historians, book discussions and educational presentations highlighting Schuylkill County's rich heritage.
Patch Town: An Evening with Author J.A. Stein
The series begins on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m., when the Society welcomes author J.A. Stein for "Patch Town: An Evening with Author J.A. Stein." Stein will discuss the history of Mary D and answer questions about her new novel, Patch Town, which is based on the true story of a community that united against corporate power. A meet-and-greet and book signing will follow the presentation. Admission is free for Society members and $5 for the general public, or free with the purchase of the book. Copies will be available in the Society's gift shop.
Pottsville at War: A Civil War Walking Tour
History enthusiasts can explore Pottsville's Civil War past during "Pottsville at War: A Civil War Walking Tour" on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. Led by public historian Jake Wynn, the guided tour will trace the city's Civil War history through downtown landmarks, including the 1851 railroad depot on East Union Street and St. Patrick's Church, using primary sources and contemporary accounts to tell the story of how Pottsville experienced the nation's defining conflict. Admission is $20 for Society members and $25 for nonmembers.
Local Reads Book Club
The Society's Local Reads Book Club returns on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m., with a discussion of The Coal Cracker Chronicles – Tall Tales and Letters to Mom by Bill Rowan. The collection of short stories explores small-town life while blending local history with elements of fantasy and surrealism. The discussion will take place at the Society's headquarters, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville.
Schuylkill Powwow Fest
September opens with the Schuylkill Powwow Fest on Saturday, Sept. 12, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will focus on the traditions and folklore of Pennsylvania Dutch Powwow, featuring guest speakers and audience discussions about the practice and its cultural significance. Admission is free for Society members and $5 for nonmembers.
America 250: Revolutionary Disloyalty – A Mineworkers' Rebellion in Schuylkill County in 1862
The season concludes on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6:30 p.m., with "America 250: Revolutionary Disloyalty – A Mineworkers' Rebellion in Schuylkill County in 1862." During the presentation, public historian Jake Wynn will examine a little-known uprising in Pennsylvania's Coal Region where draft resistance, labor unrest, racial tensions and partisan politics intersected during the Civil War.
