Born in Wilmington, DE on November 5, 1942, Kyran was the daughter of the late Edmund and Josephine (Weyman) Daley. She grew up in Pottsville, PA—graduating first from Nativity BVM High School (‘60), and then the Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing (’63).
After graduating from Nursing School, she moved to the Main Line area outside of Philadelphia to start her nursing career. She quickly forged a reputation as an excellent nurse—well respected by peers, doctors, and patients alike.
Following one visit home to Pottsville, she caught return ride back to the Philadelphia area with friends and acquaintances who were also transplants from Pottsville. One of the passengers in that packed car was Philip Malarkey, Jr., an engineering student at Villanova. While they had not previously known one another personally, that ride changed things. She and Phil married on January 22, 1966. Together, they moved all over the country—following the path of Phil’s career and moving on an average of every 2 years. This was both an adventure and a challenge—as their daughters arrived in 1966 and 1968—and being far from their families was not always easy. But they had fun. Wherever they lived, Kyran hung an embroidery reading, “Bloom where you are planted.” And they did.
In 1980, back in the Philadelphia area again, Kyran returned to nursing once her girls started high school. Once again, she dove into the work and was a respected member of the nursing staff at Paoli Memorial Hospital and the Hospital of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Always looking for growth, Kyran soon found herself ready to push the boundaries of her career, and she shifted to medical case management. It was here that she truly found a passion. She worked as a mobile case manager in the Philadelphia area. When a move took them to Dallas, TX, she joined the team at Baylor. Then, when she and Phil relocated to Tennessee, she thrived at the Patricia Neal Center. Finally, in 1998, they moved to Arnold, MD, and Kyran joined the case management staff at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. When Phil passed away in 2003, Kyran continued to work for Johns Hopkins until 2015, retiring as a Clinical Care Manager.
Kyran led an active and social life until recent years—spending time with her close friends, attending dances, playing trivia, dining out, and enjoying life in the Chesapeake Bay area. In more recent years, spending more time at home—Kyran’s lifelong appreciation for Irish and English history led to deep dives into historical fiction and biographies. Even though she was not as active in the past few years, she kept in close touch with dear friends and family across the country.
Above all though, she treasured spending time with her grandsons. If you spent any amount of time with her, you heard and saw the love she had for Sean and Ryan.
Kyran is survived by her daughters Mary Jo Malarkey of Los Angeles, CA and Kyran McLaughlin (Michael McLaughlin) and grandsons Sean and Ryan McLaughlin of Springfield, PA; brother Bob Daley (Rhonda Krammes), niece Bobbi Lea Krammes and great-nephew Landyn Zavala—all of Schuylkill Haven, PA; brother-in-law Bill Malarkey (Maureen, deceased) and nephews Kevin and James, and sisters-in-law Ann Tomalavage (Joe) and Patricia Malarkey; and cousins living all over the country.
Her parents Edmund and Josephine, and her husband Phil preceded her in death.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 20th at Saint Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville with Fr. John S. Pendzick officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 am until the time of mass. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville.
At the family's request, please consider donations to the American Heart Association. https://www.heart.org/
Arrangements have been entrusted to Lord Ebling Haus Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville, PA.
