Funeral services have been announced for Pennsylvania State Police Trooper First Class Michael E. Pahira Jr., who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
Trooper Pahira, 44, of Ashland, formerly of Frackville, was killed while serving with the Pennsylvania State Police during an incident along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County. Pahira was conducting a commercial vehicle inspection when the incident occurred.
Born in Ashland, Pahira was the son of Michael and Patricia (McHale) Pahira. He was a 2001 graduate of North Schuylkill High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically as a standout football player and wrestler. During his wrestling career, he captured a District Championship.
Following high school, Pahira attended East Stroudsburg University, where he earned his bachelor's degree and continued his wrestling career as a member of the university's wrestling team.
Pahira followed his lifelong goal of serving others by entering the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, graduating in 2007 as a member of the 124th Cadet Class. He began his career assigned to Troop N in Lehighton before later transferring to Troop L in Schuylkill County.
During nearly two decades with the Pennsylvania State Police, Pahira served as a patrol trooper before becoming a Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspector. He was remembered for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to protecting the communities he served.
Funeral services for Trooper Pahira will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the North Schuylkill High School Auditorium, 15 Academy Lane, Ashland. Monsignor William F. Glosser will officiate.
A public visitation will also be held Wednesday at the North Schuylkill High School Auditorium from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
At the family's request, graveside services will remain private and reserved for family, close friends, and fellow members of the Pennsylvania State Police.
The family is asking first responders and members of the community to line Centre Street in Ashland as the funeral procession travels to the cemetery following the service.
The funeral service will also be livestreamed, with a link expected to be provided.
Pahira is survived by his parents, Michael and Patti Pahira; his sister, Jen Buggy and her husband Damian; his nieces Brielle and Brynn; along with extended family, friends, and his brothers and sisters of the Pennsylvania State Police.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made through Help A Hero. Proceeds will be used to establish a wrestling scholarship in Trooper Pahira's name.
The Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral Home Inc. in Frackville and Girardville is assisting the Pahira family with arrangements.
