Blue Mountain erupted for 28 points in the second quarter Friday night and rolled to a 50-20 victory over Schuylkill Haven Area.
The Eagles improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Hurricanes dropped to 0-3.
Blue Mountain’s Chase Guers opened the scoring with a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt failed, giving the Eagles an early 6-0 lead.
Schuylkill Haven answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Colton Reber. Grayson Fessler added the extra point to put the Hurricanes ahead, 7-6.
The lead did not last long. Blue Mountain quarterback Cohen Kirby connected with Frank Russo for a 13-yard touchdown, and Brody Foose ran in the two-point conversion to give the Eagles a 14-7 advantage after the opening quarter.
Blue Mountain then took control with four touchdowns during the second quarter.
Foose scored on a 3-yard run before Kirby found Guers for the two-point conversion. Sonny Amato followed with an 11-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 28-7.
Kirby and Guers connected for two more scores before halftime, first on a 66-yard touchdown pass and then on a 22-yard strike. Amato ran in a two-point conversion following the first of those touchdowns.
The Eagles carried a commanding 42-7 lead into halftime.
Schuylkill Haven cut into the deficit during the third quarter when Reber broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run. Fessler’s extra point made the score 42-14.
Blue Mountain responded by recording a safety after a Schuylkill Haven punt snap went into the end zone. Amato then added his second touchdown of the night on a 47-yard run, pushing the Eagles’ lead to 50-14.
The Hurricanes completed the scoring in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Chase Yoder. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Guers accounted for three Blue Mountain touchdowns with his kickoff return and two touchdown receptions. Kirby threw three touchdown passes, while Amato scored twice on the ground.
Blue Mountain entered the matchup with a victory over Jim Thorpe and a loss to Southern Lehigh. Schuylkill Haven entered the game following losses to Mount Carmel and Tamaqua.
In Week 4, Blue Mountain will host Pottsville Area. Schuylkill Haven will travel to face Mahanoy Area, which enters the matchup with a 2-1 record.
