City officials are reminding residents to properly store and dispose of household garbage as Pottsville takes a more proactive approach to code enforcement.
In a letter signed by Mayor Tom Smith and City Administrator Rob Straebel, officials said the city has observed garbage being left outside appropriate trash cans and roll-off toters. Unsecured garbage and trash bags can attract rats, insects and other vermin while creating unsanitary conditions.
Pottsville Garbage Storage Requirements
The city reminded residents that all household garbage must be stored in trash cans or roll-off toters with tight-fitting lids. Households must also have enough containers to hold all the garbage they generate.
Roll-off toters may be rented through the Pottsville City Tax Office for an additional $10.50 per quarter on a resident’s bill. Residents may also purchase their own containers.
When Garbage Can Be Placed at the Curb
Garbage may not be placed at the curb before 5 p.m. on the day before collection. Trash cans and other receptacles should be removed from the curb as soon as possible following collection and should not be left on sidewalks indefinitely.
Residents are also being asked to secure loose garbage, pick up litter around their properties and make sure trash is properly contained for collection.
Code Enforcement and Reporting Problems
The city said it prefers residents and neighbors to work together to correct problems before enforcement becomes necessary. However, citations will be issued when appropriate.
