Heritage on Display in Shenandoah

Heritage Day was celebrated Saturday in Shenandoah.

On Saturday, the 20th Annual Shenandoah Heritage Day and 19th Annual Parade of Nations was held. The day also included a home decorating contest and an Art Show.

The annual celebration of the community’s ethnic diversity was sponsored by the revitalization group Downtown Shenandoah Inc. It featured artisans, crafters and vendors as well as ethnic food from around the world.

This year’s parade grand marshal was Peter Vernalis, owner of Vernalis' Restaurant, who was instrumental in fundraising and construction regarding the Pennsylvania Anthracite Miners Memorial, which now is a community attraction at the northeast corner of Main and Washington streets. Vernalis' Restaurant just celebrated 70 years of operating in the borough.

Vernalis was recognized after the parade by a proclamation from Shenandoah Mayor Andrew Szczyglak which made August 25, 2018 Peter Vernalis Day in the borough.
