Mahanoy City Man Suspected of DUI and Causing Route 61 Crash near Pottsville, Injuring 6

A Mahanoy City man is suspected of driving under the influence with three children in his car and injuring a total of 6 people in a three vehicle crash on Route 61 Monday afternoon.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, the crash occurred on Route 61 near the intersection with Tumbling Run Road near Wieners Metal around 3:30pm.

Police say Bernard Schuck, 31, was operating a Suzuki Grand Vitara with a passenger and three children in the vehicle with him when he was traveling south on Route 61, crossed over the median, and struck a Chevrolet Silverado heading north.

After impacting the Silverado, Schuck struck a third vehicle, a Kia Sorento.

Police have not released the identity of anyone else involved in the crash but police say Shuck was suspected of driving under the influence and charges are pending and will be filed after blood test results are received.

A total of 6 people, including Schuck, were injured in the crash.  Multiple medical helicopters were flown into Nativity to transport the patients.

Route 61 was closed for nearly 3 hours while the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared.
