Response to Smoke Investigation Leads to Mahanoy City Man in Custody, Home Deemed Unsafe

A response to a smoke investigation in Mahanoy City led to a man in custody on Sunday afternoon.

According to Mahanoy City Police, around 5:00pm, Sunday, the fire department as well as police responded to a smoke investigation at 1400 East Centre Street.

Fire Chief Dan Markiewicz arrived, followed by Officer Frank Gallo and found a woman screaming in the street into the home.

The woman was yelling for a man, later identified as John Byczek, 33, to get out of the home.

As the officer approached the home and identified himself, Byczek threatened to assault the officer.

Byczek eventually came out of the home and continued to scream in the street telling the police and fire department to leave and that there was "no meth lab" at the home.

Byczek continued to not cooperate and refused when Officer Gallo attempted to handcuff him.

Byczek continued to resist until two Mahanoy City firefighters Joseph Gavala and Shane Finneran helped take him into custody.

A check of the residence by Chief Markiewicz found tea bags smoldering on the oven in the kitchen.

Byczek was evaluated by EMS at the scene and taken to the Mahanoy City Police Station where Shenandoah Police assisted.

The West Mahanoy Township Police and State Police also responded to the scene to assist.

Byczek was charged with making terroristic threats, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and persistant disorderly conduct.

Byczek was arraigned and transported to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $25,000 straight cash bail.

Mahanoy City Fire remained on scene at the incident until Mahanoy City Code Enforcement arrived on scene.  The home was posted as unsafe to live in.
