Two Injured in Interstate 81 Crash Last Friday


Two men were injured in a crash along Interstate 81 near Delano last Friday.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 near mile marker 134 near the Delano Exit on Friday, November 5th, 2021 around 5:20pm.

Troopers say JeanCarlos Diaz, 39, of Lansford was traveling southbound and had mechanical problems with his Ford F-150 and stopped along the media area.  When he stopped, the rear end of his truck was partially positioned within the left lane.

Richard Smith, 35, of Harrisburg was traveling southbound as well and struck the rear-end of Diaz's truck.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Both suffered unknown injuries and were transported by EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton.

Northbound and southbound lanes were closed for a period of time while the scene was cleared just before 7:00pm.

Assisting police at the scene were EMS from LVHN and Mahanoy City along with fire personnel from Delano Township and McAdoo.
