Fire Damages Home in Girardville; Space Heater to Blame

Firefighters responded to a house fire Monday evening in Girardville.

Just before 7:00pm, Monday, emergency personnel were called to the 100 unit block of West Ogden Street, Girardville, for smoke in a house.  The caller, a neighbor, reported that smoke was going from the home and flames could be seen on the 2nd floor.

Firefighters arrived on scene and reported a working fire in the second floor front bedroom of 141 West Ogden.

Firefighters from Girardville, Ashland, and Mahanoy City responded to the scene and had the fire under control within minutes and began overhaul. Ashland Police were also on scene.

The fire severely damaged the bedroom and the rest of the home sustained smoke and water damage.

Nobody was at home at the time of the incident but a dog was rescued by firefighters.  The two people that lived in the home are reported to be staying with friends.

Girardville Fire Chief Frank Zangari completed the investigation into the fire and reported that it was caused by a space heater.

Ashland and Mahanoy City firefighters remained on scene for about an hour and Girardville firefighters cleared the scene around 9:00pm.
