Velma L. Mantz, 89, of Tamaqua, PA, died on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, in Coaldale, PA. 

Born on September 22, 1932, in East Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA, she was a daughter of the late Lewis A. and Mabel A. (Wertman) Mantz. A 1950 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Velma was a licensed insurance agent. She owned and operated the former Gebert Insurance Agency, Tamaqua which she sold to the Tamaqua Insurance Center for whom she then worked and from where she retired. A life member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua, Velma had served on both the Finance Committee and the Endowment Fund Committee at the church. 

Last member of her immediate family, Velma was predeceased by siblings, Fern Mantz, Eleanor Hayes, Eileen Lutz, Wilda Umphrey, and Kermit Mantz. 

She is survived by nephews, nieces, and a brother-in-law. 

Services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua, PA with The Rev. Cindy White officiating. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, 503 West Broad Street, Tamaqua, will follow the services. Call 10 – 11 AM Friday at the funeral home. Memorials in Velma’s name may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, c/o Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 101 North Greenwood Street, Tamaqua, PA 18252.

Arrangements are being handled by the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Tamaqua.

John Michael Slish, 71, of Forestville, Cass Township, passed away on Wednesday in the presence of his family at his home.

Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late John F. Slish and the late Dorothy (nee Yenfer) Slish. He was a graduate of Minersville High School, and was a 46-year employee of Dayton Superior Corporation, Tremont, formerly Richmond Screw Anchor Co.

He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union and a longstanding active member of the Forestville Citizen's Fire Company since 1974 during which time he served in positions as Treasurer, Trustee, Assistant Chief, Chief Chauffeur, and Schuylkill County Delegate.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was predeceased by two siblings, George Slish and Paul Slish; a niece, Amanda Slish.

John is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Lodean Taylor; three remaining siblings, Jacqueline Wolfe (spouse, Lamar), Pine Grove, Edward Slish (spouse, Jill), Forestville, and Dotty Purcell (spouse, Keith), Forestville; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are private at the convenience of the family. Dutcavich Funeral Home has charge.
