Fighter's Heaven to Celebrate Black History Month This Saturday

Celebrate "Black History Month" with a special program at Fighter's Heaven, Muhammad Ali's Training Camp near Deer Lake, PA on Saturday Feb. 25th from 11 am until 3:45 pm.

The event is free of charge and the public is invited to attend.

The event is being organized by Pottsville native Aaron Snowell, a well-known boxing trainer who was inducted into the National Boxing Hall of Fame in 2018. He has trained famous champions such as Mike Tyson, Tim Witherspoon and Frankie Randall.

Black History Month is celebrated each February as an opportunity to honor the accomplishments and recognize the struggles of African Americans in every area of history. This program at Fighter's Heaven will highlight the many great African American fighters through boxing history who have proudly stood as symbols of aspiration, success, power and resolve. Some overcame the systemic odds to become champions, while many illustrious names were denied deserved opportunities.

Muhammad Ali built his famous Training Camp at Deer Lake in 1972 and used it until the end of his career. Ali trained here for some of his most famous fights, including “The Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman and “The Thrilla in Manila” against Joe Frazier. This historic site was purchased by Mike Madden in 2016 and has been restored to the way it looked when Ali trained here.

The program will begin at 12 noon and will include a presentation by Snowell where he will talk about the History of the Names on the famous boulders at the camp.  Gail Muhammad will talk about Ali's Mosque and Hall of Fame Boxing Judge and 1st African American female boxing judge Lynne Carter will speak.

The program will end with an open pic and phone-ins from guests, fighters, trainers, managers, and promoters.
