Shenandoah Rescue Hook and Ladder Fire Company Celebrates 150th Anniversary

In a celebration of 150 years of community service, the Rescue Hook and Ladder Fire Company from Shenandoah gathered on Saturday evening for a banquet at the West End Fire Company's Hall in Mahanoy City.

The event brought together both longstanding and new members in a tribute to the company's rich history of sacrifices and dedication.

Guest Speaker Mike Kitsock, Schuylkill County Fire Historian, regaled attendees with tales of the Hookies drawn from personal experiences and deep historical insights. Kitsock's address provided a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of the company since its inception, even harking back to the days when Ulysses S. Grant held the presidency.

Reflecting on the commitment of its members, Kitsock related how the apparatus has transformed over the past 150 years, once reliant on horse-drawn carriages for firefighting endeavors.

Company President Bill Moyer took the stage to honor 40-year members, that included: Fred Keim, John Buchinsky, Dean Perrong, Thomas Ulicany, and Alfred Onushack.

For their dedicated years of service, which includes the work behind the company's annual block party: Gary Howard, Robert Hopkins, and Robert Wasilewski.

Corey Rainis was recognized for his years of service as Fire Marshal for Shenandoah from 2012 to 2019.  Rainis was able to obtain 2 federal grants for the fire company that assisted in purchasing 30 sets of fire gear and air packs.

Lieutenant Mark Hysock received a special commendation for his heroic actions in December 2023, when he rescued an infant from a house fire in Shenandoah Heights.

On behalf of the entire Shenandoah Fire Department, Fire Chief Rick Examitas recognized retired Fire Chief Russ Schumack, acknowledging his dedicated service.

The evening served as a reminder of the selflessness and bravery exhibited by the men and women of the Rescue Hook and Ladder Fire Company, both past and present, in safeguarding their community.
