Two Charged in Shooting Incident During Burglary in Port Carbon

Two men were charged for their involvement in a shooting and burglary in Port Carbon early last year.

According to a press release from the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, Dennis Powanda, 40, and Vincent Yakaitis, 74, both of Pottsville were charged Thursday.

Powanda was charged with burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, and possessing the instrument of a crime.

Yakaitis was charged with firearm not to be carried without a license.

Troopers say Powanda was burglarizing a home at 222 2nd Street in Port Carbon around 1:50am on February 7th, 2023 when he was shot by the property owner, Yakaitis.

Both were arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David Plachko on Friday.

Powanda's bail was set at $25,000 unsecured and he was released.

Yakaitis's bail was set at $10,000 unsecured and he was released.

Both are scheduled to appear before Judge Plachko on April 30th, 2024, for a preliminary hearing.
