Mahanoy City West End Fire and Rescue Marks 100 Years with Parade and Weeklong Celebration

Mahanoy City’s West End Fire and Rescue Company commemorated a century of service to the community on Saturday with a grand parade and a series of ceremonies honoring its storied history.
Capping off a week-long centennial celebration, the parade featured an impressive 119 units, drawing spectators along the borough’s streets. The procession was led by the Mahanoy City Police Department, members of the Red Knights of Mahanoy City Motorcycle Club, and antique fire apparatus that have faithfully served the West End over the decades.

The festivities began earlier in the week with a church service, a history night recounting the company’s milestones, and a formal banquet recognizing past and present members.

Following the parade, company representatives were presented with citations and commendations from state and local legislators acknowledging their dedication and contributions to public safety.

Harvey Eckart, a Mack Fire Truck historian, addressed the crowd, highlighting the importance of preserving the legacy of firefighting equipment.

Two of the company’s prized vehicles—a 1950 Mack and a 1975 Mack fire truck—played a special role in the day’s events. Both were showcased in the parade and took part in a traditional housing ceremony, where they were ceremonially christened and pushed back into the firehouse.

The West End Fire and Rescue Company was established in 1925 and has remained a vital part of Mahanoy City’s emergency response ever since.
