Schuylkill County Woman Scammed Out of Over $5,800 in Online Banking Fraud

A Rush Township resident was the victim of an online scam recently, according to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville.

Troopers say a 55-year-old woman reported receiving a text message from someone claiming to be a representative of Chime Mobile Banking.

According to police, the message alleged that the woman's account had been hacked and questioned whether she had authorized several suspicious charges. The scammer then advised her to immediately move all her money out of her Chime account and any other linked accounts into her Apple Wallet for "security reasons."

Trusting the message, the victim transferred a total of $5,810 to her Apple Wallet and provided the individual with her banking information—only to later discover that the communication was fraudulent and that she had been scammed out of the entire amount.

The case is currently under investigation as a theft by deception and impersonation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Trooper Karaman at PSP Frackville by calling (570) 874-5300.
