Gilberton Woman Charged with Felony Retail Theft for Price Tag Switching Scheme

A Gilberton woman is facing felony charges after police say she repeatedly altered price tags at a local grocery store, defrauding the business out of more than $1,300 over several months.
Tabitha Marie Murphy, 50, of Gilberton, has been charged by Shenandoah Police Officer Leo Luciani Jr. with one count of felony retail theft - specifically, altering or removing price markings.

According to court documents, the charges stem from an investigation launched by the Loss Prevention Supervisor at Redner’s Warehouse Market, located in the Gold Star Plaza in Shenandoah Borough.

The store reported that Murphy engaged in a scheme where she would select items from the store, alter their price tags to reflect a lower cost, and then use the self-checkout to pay the reduced price. Authorities say this activity began in April 2024 and continued through January 2025.

The total value of merchandise affected by the alleged scheme amounted to $1,357.68.

Police also noted that Murphy has a prior conviction for retail theft, which contributes to the felony grading of the current charge.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 14, 2025, before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker in Shenandoah.
