Tamaqua Woman Charged After Domestic Dispute in Pottsville

POTTSVILLE – A Tamaqua woman is facing charges after police say a domestic dispute turned physical Friday evening in the city.
According to Pottsville Police, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of South 3rd Street on August 22, 2025, for a reported domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim and identified the other party as 33-year-old Kaitlynn Sophy of Tamaqua.

The victim told police that during an argument with his ex-girlfriend, Sophy, he asked to be dropped off. While he was saying goodbye to their daughter, who was seated in a car seat, Sophy allegedly struck him in the face with her fist.

The victim reported that he pushed Sophy away and attempted to restrain her, at which point she began scratching him. Police noted visible scratches and redness on both sides of the victim’s neck.

Sophy admitted at the scene that she became physical with the victim and confirmed to officers that he was attempting to defend himself. She was taken into custody and transported to City Hall, where she was read her Miranda Rights and agreed to speak further with investigators. Police say Sophy again admitted to initiating the physical altercation.

Following the investigation, police charged Sophy with simple assault (M2) pursuant to domestic violence, and harassment (S).
