Fight Over Girlfriend Ends With Head Injury, Lavelle Man Behind Bars

A Lavelle man is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, following a violent altercation in Butler Township Thursday afternoon.
According to Butler Township Police, officers were dispatched around 4:07 p.m. on October 16, 2025, to 118 Barry Road, Ashland, for a reported fight involving multiple people. Initial reports indicated that one man had been struck in the head with a board.

Chief Christopher Hand, Sgt. Eric Vinskie, and Patrolman Raymond Horan of Butler Township responded, with assistance from Frackville Patrolman Brian Reno, Ashland Patrolmen Tyler Dissinger and Daniel Weikel, and West Mahanoy Township Officer Mark Hysock.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a head injury. The victim told police he was struck by Anthony J. Maziarz, 41, of Lavelle, the former boyfriend of his current girlfriend. EMS was called to the scene.

Police say the girlfriend reported that Maziarz had entered the small building at the rear of the property where she was sitting. She alleged that Maziarz got on top of her and attempted to take a key she wore around her neck using telephone cable. The victim stated he forced his way inside after seeing Maziarz on top of his girlfriend, at which point a physical altercation broke out. During the struggle, Maziarz allegedly struck the victim on the head with a piece of wood, causing a large laceration.

Officers located Maziarz inside a trailer on the property. After initially refusing to come outside, he was detained, handcuffed for safety, and read his Miranda rights. While being transported, Maziarz allegedly admitted to police, stating, “that I hit him in the head.”

Following the investigation, Maziarz was charged with:
  • Two counts of aggravated assault (felonies)
  • Two counts of simple assault (misdemeanors)
  • Two counts of harassment
  • One count of disorderly conduct
Maziarz was arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge James Reiley and committed to Schuylkill County Prison on $20,000 straight cash bail.
