Shenandoah Valley vs. Mahanoy Rivalry Game to Honor Historic Wins, Support Cancer Benefit, and Conclude Food Drive Competition

This Friday night’s high school football matchup between the Mahanoy Area Golden Bears and the Shenandoah Valley Blue Devils promises to be more than just another game under the lights.

Along with the intensity of a long-standing rivalry, the evening will serve as a celebration of Shenandoah Valley’s storied football history, a community fundraiser, and the conclusion of a friendly but meaningful competition between the two schools.

Honoring Legendary Victories

The game comes during the 50th anniversary of Shenandoah Valley’s stunning 1975 upset over Mount Carmel, a win that has remained one of the school's sports memories in Blue Devils football history. Former players, coaches, staff, cheerleaders, band members, classmates, and fans from both the 1975 team and the legendary 1958 squad will be welcomed back to Shenandoah Valley.

The 1958 victory is particularly notable. That season, Shenandoah shocked the state by defeating Mount Carmel 25-0 at the Silver Bowl, cementing its place in Pennsylvania high school football lore.

At halftime, representatives from the 1975 and 1958 teams will be honored on the field, alongside members of the Shenandoah Valley Class of 1976 and Shenandoah High School Class of 1959.

The celebrations will continue after the final whistle. From 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., the Columbia Hose and Fire Company will host a post-game get-together for alumni, families, friends, and supporters to reminisce and reconnect.

Playing for a Cause

This year’s rivalry also carries an important charitable element. Both schools are rallying together to support Leanne Hall, a Shenandoah native, former Blue Devils volleyball coach, and Mahanoy Area teacher, who is currently battling cancer. Proceeds and donations raised on Friday will go toward helping Hall and her family during her fight.

Food Drive Finale

In addition, the contest marks the conclusion of the Second Annual Food Drive Competition between Shenandoah Valley and Mahanoy Area. Over the past several weeks, students, staff, and community members from both towns have been collecting non-perishable food items and monetary donations for their local food pantries. The winning school will be announced at the game, but regardless of the outcome, both communities benefit from this spirited and generous effort.
