The Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce hosted the 3rd Annual Schuylkill Winterfest on Saturday, transforming Alvernia University’s Pottsville CollegeTowne into a festive winter destination filled with community spirit, family-friendly activities, and friendly competition.
The event officially kicked off with the introduction of the Pottsville Winter Carnival participants and Vulcans, followed by a live performance from the Zenith, setting the tone for a full day of entertainment. Throughout the afternoon, attendees explored a wide variety of attractions, including local vendors, food trucks, and live ice sculpting demonstrations.
One of the most anticipated highlights of the day was the Mrs. T’s Pierogies Eating Contest. Six participants took on the challenge of eating 25 pierogies as fast as possible, drawing a large crowd of spectators. Jonathan Montag, of Pottsville, emerged victorious, finishing his plate in just under three minutes and earning bragging rights — along with additional Mrs. T’s Pierogies.
Another fan-favorite event was the Boilo Contest, celebrating what many consider the “champagne of the Coal Region.” The competition featured two categories — Traditional and Non-Traditional — showcasing the creativity and heritage behind the region’s iconic holiday drink.
Despite early snowfall and chilly temperatures Saturday morning, hundreds of people turned out for the event. Attendees of all ages enjoyed the lively atmosphere, sampling local food, supporting area businesses, and celebrating the unique culture and traditions of Schuylkill County.
