Winter Storm Warning Issued for Schuylkill County; 6–12 Inches of Snow Possible

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Schuylkill County, with significant snowfall and strong winds expected to impact the area Sunday into Monday.

The warning is in effect from 5:00 AM Sunday until 1:00 PM EST Monday.

What to Expect

Forecasters say heavy snow is likely, with total accumulations between 6 and 12 inches possible across Schuylkill County and portions of central Pennsylvania.

In addition to the snow, winds could gust as high as 40 mph Sunday night into Monday, creating blowing and drifting snow and reducing visibility.

Snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour at times, particularly within heavier snow bands.

Storm Timing

As of the latest forecast:

  • Snow is expected to begin as showers around 3:00 AM Sunday
  • Steadier and heavier snow is expected to develop by daybreak Sunday
  • The heaviest snowfall is expected Sunday afternoon into Sunday night
  • Snow is expected to taper off around noon Monday

Potential Impacts

The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds could:

  • Down tree limbs and power lines
  • Cause sporadic power outages
  • Make travel very difficult to impossible
  • Impact the Monday morning commute

Forecasters note that uncertainty remains regarding where the heaviest snow bands will set up. Localized areas could see higher totals depending on where those bands develop.

Residents are urged to limit travel during the height of the storm, prepare for possible power outages, and continue monitoring updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
