Yankowski Claims $10,000 Victory at Big Diamond Speedway’s Money in the Mountains Race

Alex Yankowski returned to familiar territory Friday night and walked away with a major payday at Big Diamond Speedway, winning the annual Fritz Roehrig Memorial Money in the Mountains feature.
Yankowski, of Covington Township, earned $10,000 for his performance in the 358 Modified feature, which was cut short due to rain. Despite the early finish—13 laps shy of the scheduled 50—it was evident that Yankowski had the car to beat throughout the night.

Starting from the pole after a favorable draw, Yankowski quickly set the pace and maintained control over the field. Anthony Perrego ran second early, followed by Kevin Beach Jr., Brett Kressley, and Tim Buckwalter.

As the race progressed, Yankowski steadily extended his lead while navigating lapped traffic with ease. A key moment came on lap 34 when Perrego suffered a left rear flat tire, bringing out a caution and ending his night.

On the restart, Kressley moved into second, but Buckwalter soon took over the runner-up spot. Before any serious challenge could develop, rain moved into the area, forcing officials to call the race early.

Yankowski said the win carried special meaning, noting his history at the track.

“This place has always been special to me,” Yankowski said. “It’s where I learned to race early on, and it feels great to come back and win here.”

The victory marked his first win at Big Diamond since capturing the Coalcracker event in 2021.

Buckwalter finished second, followed by Kressley, Louden Reimert, and Mike Lisowski to round out the top five.

In the Roadrunner feature, veteran driver Mike Reichert of New Ringgold captured his 19th career win after a hard-fought battle with brothers Jared and Joe Bassininsky.

Jared Bassininsky led early, with Joe close behind and Reichert running third. Reichert worked his way to the front using the inside line and took the lead with eight laps remaining. He then held off multiple late challenges to secure the win.

Joe Bassininsky’s chances ended with a spin in turn four with two laps to go, allowing Jared Bassininsky to finish second behind Reichert.

Due to the weather-shortened program, the 602 Crate Sportsman and Rookie 602 Crate Sportsman features were postponed and will be made up during the April 17 racing program.
