Woman and Child Injured in Pool Chemical Accident in Schuylkill County

A woman and a young child were injured Tuesday morning following a pool chemical accident at a residence in Hegins Township, according to the Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven.
Troopers reported that emergency personnel were dispatched around 8:55 a.m. on May 26, 2026, to a home in the 400 block of East Mountain Road for a report of multiple chemical burn injuries.

According to state police, a 76-year-old woman was mixing pool chemicals in a five-gallon bucket when a chemical reaction occurred. The reaction caused the chemicals to splash onto the woman and a 4-year-old boy who was standing nearby.

The woman suffered chemical burns and respiratory distress. She was flown to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.

The child was transported to Penn State Health Children's Hospital in Hershey. Police said the boy was discharged shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Following the incident, local fire companies decontaminated the scene. The investigation determined that the injuries were the result of a chemical reaction that occurred while the pool chemicals were being mixed.

State police continue to remind residents to carefully follow manufacturer instructions when handling and mixing pool chemicals.
