Extreme Heat Watch Issued for Schuylkill County as Dangerous Heat Expected Midweek

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Schuylkill County and much of central and southeastern Pennsylvania as dangerously hot temperatures and oppressive humidity are expected to grip the region later this week.
The watch is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening.

Forecasters say heat index values, what the temperature feels like when humidity is factored in, could climb between 105 and 110 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.

In addition to the daytime heat, overnight temperatures are expected to remain unusually warm, generally staying in the low to mid-70s. The lack of nighttime cooling, combined with multiple days of near-record temperatures, will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to the heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

Residents are encouraged to:
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours.
  • Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended inside vehicles.
  • Ensure pets have access to fresh water and shade if they must remain outdoors.

Schuylkill County is among more than 20 counties included in the watch, which covers a large portion of central Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor the latest forecasts, as the watch could be upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning if confidence in the dangerous conditions continues to increase.
