The enforcement effort will target vehicles with expired inspections or registrations parked on borough streets, as well as vehicles parked facing the wrong direction.
According to police, Borough Ordinance No. 643, as amended by Ordinance No. 657 in 2022, prohibits vehicles with expired inspections or expired registrations from being parked on any borough street.
Under the ordinance, vehicles found in violation are subject to immediate towing and a $25 penalty. If the fine is not paid within five days, additional assessments may be added. Police emphasized that violators may be ticketed and towed with or without notice.
Officials also noted that placing a tarp or vehicle cover over a vehicle does not exempt it from the ordinance or prevent enforcement.
In addition to enforcing the borough ordinance, Ashland Police said officers are also focusing on improper parking under Pennsylvania Vehicle Code Title 75, Section 3354.
State law requires vehicles parked along a street to be parked parallel with the right side of the vehicle next to the curb, or, where no curb exists, as close as practical to the right edge of the roadway.
Police said that means parking a vehicle facing against the flow of traffic is prohibited. In other words, the passenger side of the vehicle must be closest to the curb.
Drivers found violating the parking direction requirement may receive parking tickets or traffic citations.
Ashland Police said the increased enforcement is intended to address ongoing parking concerns within the borough and urged residents to ensure their vehicles have current inspection and registration and are legally parked to avoid fines, citations, or towing.
