Boil Water Advisory Issued for Ashland Area Water Authority Customers Following Water Main Break

The Ashland Area Water Authority has issued a boil water advisory for customers in the Ashland and Fountain Springs areas after a water main break caused a loss of water pressure in the system.
According to a Drinking Water Warning issued through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Safe Drinking Water, the problem occurred on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when a water main break resulted in a loss of positive water pressure.

Officials said the loss of pressure can create conditions that allow possible contamination to enter the water distribution system through back-pressure or back-siphonage. As a result, there is an increased risk that the water may contain disease-causing organisms.

The water main break occurred near the water storage tank located close to the water treatment plant, prompting a system-wide notice for Ashland Area Water Authority customers.

Until further notice, residents are advised not to drink tap water without boiling it first.

Customers should:

  • Bring all water to a rolling boil.
  • Let it boil for at least one minute.
  • Allow the water to cool before using.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until the advisory is lifted.

Officials said inadequately treated water may contain bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause symptoms including nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and headaches.

Infants, young children, pregnant women, some elderly individuals, and those with severely compromised immune systems may be at increased risk and should consult their healthcare provider for guidance.

The Ashland Area Water Authority said customers will be notified once corrective actions are completed and the boil water advisory is lifted.
