Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society Presentation to Highlight History of Main and Center Streets

The Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society will take a look back at the history of one of Shenandoah’s most recognizable intersections during its upcoming presentation meeting.

The program will be held Tuesday, July 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society Museum, located at 201 South Main Street in Shenandoah.

The topic for the evening will be “Main and Center Streets, the Four Corners,” presented by Andy Ulicny.

The presentation will focus on the history of the four corners that make up Shenandoah’s main intersection and the buildings that played important roles in the borough’s early development.

According to the Historical Society, the first building erected in Shenandoah, several years before the town’s incorporation, was the United States Hotel, which stood on the southwest corner of Main and Center Streets.

Ulicny will also discuss the history of the other prominent corners, including the Beddall Building, which housed an early version of the Shenandoah Trust Company; the Shenandoah Trust Building, later known as the Steif’s Building; and the Egan Building, which later became home to Bolick, Burke and Webb.

The program will include a PowerPoint presentation featuring photographs from various eras, showing how the center of Shenandoah changed and developed over the years.

Following the presentation, guests are invited to stay for a social gathering with refreshments.

The event is open to the public, and as always, there is no admission charge.
