Jose Antonio Bonilla Perez, 56, is charged with felony strangulation, misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Schuylkill Haven Police, officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 200 block of Dock Street shortly after midnight on Thursday, August 27, for a reported assault.
Police said officers arrived to find Bonilla Perez and the alleged victim standing outside the building. Bonilla Perez reportedly had his hands raised and was wearing a white shirt with bloodstains on the chest.
The woman had bloodstains on her shirt, marks around her neck and black-and-blue discoloration around her left eye, which police said had begun to swell.
According to the affidavit, the woman told officers that Bonilla Perez punched her in the left eye and choked her to the point that she believed she may have lost consciousness. She reportedly could not recall whether she had actually become unconscious.
Police said the woman showed officers the bedroom where the incident allegedly occurred. Investigators reported finding what appeared to be bloodstains on a bedsheet.
The woman was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene but declined additional medical treatment, according to police.
Bonilla Perez was taken into custody without further incident and arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek. Bail was set at $25,000 monetary.
Court records show Bonilla Perez was committed to Schuylkill County Prison after he was unable to post bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, at 10 a.m. before Kosciolek.
