Mahanoy Area will recognize five former athletes and coaches with induction into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Thursday evening, October 1, 2026, before the Golden Bears’ football game against Minersville.
2026 Mahanoy Area Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony
The induction ceremony is scheduled for . The 2026 Hall of Fame class includes:

- John Minalda Sr.
- John Minalda Jr.
- Tyler Cavenas
- Robert “Bob” Killian
The class includes a father and son, athletes who continued their careers at the collegiate level and longtime coaches whose contributions extended across several Schuylkill County schools.
The following career highlights were drawn from biographies provided for the induction ceremony.
David Holland — Mahanoy Area Class of 1971
Holland was a three-year starter and 1,000-point scorer for the Mahanoy Area boys’ basketball team. He earned honorable mention All-State recognition as a junior and fifth-team All-State honors as a senior, when he led the Schuylkill League in scoring.
He also was listed among Pennsylvania’s top 25 basketball players in the All-American Basketball Yearbook Magazine.
His accomplishments earned him a Division I basketball scholarship to Holy Cross, where he played for four years under George Blaney. Holland served as co-captain of the 1975 team, which finished 20–8 and earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament.
After beginning his teaching and coaching career in Cape May, New Jersey, Holland returned to Pennsylvania. He taught at Minersville Area for 13 years and coached its varsity boys’ basketball team for eight years.
He later spent 22 years teaching at Pine Grove Area, including eight years as its varsity boys’ basketball coach, and coached at Nativity BVM from 2004 through 2007.
Holland remains involved in basketball as a Minersville assistant coach, through summer camps and through his individual “Shooting Stars” shooting clinic. He also is the author of When the Game Was Just a Game.
John Minalda Sr. — Mahanoy City Class of 1957
Minalda Sr. will be inducted posthumously for a career that combined football, military service and education.
A two-year varsity letter winner at Mahanoy City High School under Joe Pilconis, Minalda served in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation. He later used the G.I. Bill to attend Bloomsburg State Teachers College, where he earned a chemistry degree.
In 1967, he returned to the community as a chemistry teacher and football coach at Mahanoy Area. He coached the Golden Bears’ offensive and defensive lines through the 1985 season, contributing to several of the program’s successful teams.
Those teams included the 1980 Golden Bears, who finished 9–2 and won the Schuylkill County Football League and an Eastern Conference championship. The 1983 team finished 11–2 and captured another Eastern Conference title.
After leaving coaching, Minalda continued teaching and served as science department head and a class adviser until retiring in the early 2000s. He died in July 2011.
John Minalda Jr. — Mahanoy Area Class of 1983
Minalda Jr. will enter the Hall of Fame alongside his father after establishing his own record as a player and coach.
A quarterback and defensive back under Bill Fazio from 1980 through 1982, he finished his high school career with 1,488 passing yards and 15 touchdown passes. His seven interceptions as a senior stood as a school record at the time and helped earn him All-County and All-Area recognition.
He was named Mahanoy Area’s 1983 Male Scholar Athlete and also played on Mickey Holland’s 1982–83 basketball team, which finished as the District XI runner-up.
After graduating from St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Minalda began a coaching career that included stops at Susquehanna, Schuylkill Haven, Shenandoah Valley, Pine Grove, Mahanoy Area and North Schuylkill.
As Mahanoy Area’s offensive coordinator in 2010, he installed the Flexbone offense and helped the Golden Bears achieve their first winning football season of the century.
That season included a rivalry victory over Shenandoah Valley in which Mahanoy Area rushed for 367 yards without attempting a pass, reclaiming the Damato-Szematowicz Trophy for the first time in a decade.
He later spent seven seasons on North Schuylkill’s offensive staff, including its 2018 District XI championship season, before returning to Mahanoy Area as offensive coordinator in 2025.
In February 2026, the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association recognized him for 32 years of coaching.
Minalda also retired after a 25-year career with the Pennsylvania State Police. He serves as a Butler Township police officer and North Schuylkill school resource officer.
Tyler Cavenas — Mahanoy Area Class of 2014
Cavenas distinguished himself in football, basketball and track and field before continuing his athletic career at Lehigh University.
In football, he was selected as both Mahanoy Area’s and Schuylkill County’s Scholar Athlete. He earned first-team All-Area recognition at offensive and defensive tackle and was named the Schuylkill County Coaches Association Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Cavenas also received first-team All-State honors from Pennsylvania Football News and The Associated Press. His other honors included WNEP Dream Team recognition, T102 Lineman of the Year and selection as Pennsylvania’s male representative for the Wendy’s High School Heisman.
In basketball, Cavenas helped Mahanoy Area win three District XI championships and a Schuylkill League title.
In track and field, he won District XI championships in the shot put and discus, a Schuylkill League shot put title and qualified for the state championships three times. His induction biography credits him with holding the school records in both throwing events.
At Lehigh, Cavenas appeared in 43 games over four seasons, helped the Mountain Hawks win two Patriot League championships and earned second-team All-Patriot League honors as a junior and senior. He graduated in 2018 with a business administration degree.
Cavenas is unable to attend because of work commitments and the anticipated arrival of his first child, according to his biography. His father, Terry; sister, McKenna; and uncle, John Cavenas, will accept the honor on his behalf.
Robert “Bob” Killian — Mahanoy Area Class of 1976
Killian’s induction recognizes his accomplishments as a basketball player and more than 35 years of service to Mahanoy Area athletics as a coach and educator.
As a senior in 1976, he led the Schuylkill League in scoring at 18 points per game, earned first-team All-County honors and was selected for the league’s first All-Star Game. He also was named among the Todd Jones Top 100 Players in Pennsylvania.
After graduating from Mansfield University, Killian returned to Mahanoy Area as a teacher and coach. He served as an assistant football coach under Bill Fazio and was part of the staffs that helped the Golden Bears win back-to-back Eastern Conference championships in 1986 and 1987.
He also spent many years as an assistant basketball coach under Mickey Holland, contributing to teams that won Schuylkill League and district championships and advanced in the state playoffs.
As Mahanoy Area’s head golf coach for more than 20 years, Killian led the team to multiple division championships and coached a golfer who qualified for the PIAA championships.
Killian retired in 2016 and moved to Ocala, Florida, with his wife, Christa.
