Schuylkill Haven to Unveil New Town Clock

The Schuylkill Haven community is invited to celebrate the official unveiling of the new Town Clock on Saturday April 23, 2022 from 10 am to 10:30 am at the Municipal Parking lot, near the train station in Schuylkill Haven.
Support for the clock began back in 1999 when the old Town Clock donated by Mary Zwerling in honor of her late husband Dr. Hermann Zwerling, was no longer working. Local business and organizations came together to support the funding of the new clock, led by a significant contribution by the North Ward Social Club.

Local dignitaries will meet at the municipal parking lot by the train station. Light refreshments will be available, offered by Hess Catering as well as a special dedication clock cookie designed by The Cake Pros, while supplies last. Music will be provided by Schuyl Gurlz.

The Borough of Schuylkill Haven’s new town clock was installed in March at the post office. This is the same location as the original Zwerling clock which was dedicated in May 1992. It has been over two years since we had a clock in town and almost four years since we had one that worked.

As contributions have been made by local businesses and residents, the new clock will be dedicated to the townspeople of Schuylkill Haven. Jerry Bowman, Council President stated, “It’s exciting to see strong support for the Town Clock from individuals and organizations in the Schuylkill Haven community. A big thank you to the Greater Schuylkill Haven Area Business Association for the planning, dedication and celebration”.

The clock is a Courtyard model with a Borough of Schuylkill Haven inscription. It was manufactured by Verdin Design Group, Cincinnati, Ohio, it is about 11 feet tall, black and white with gold trim.

While a final decision by the Borough Council still has to be made, the former clock donated by the Zwerlings is in storage. There has been local interest in the clock and the borough is confident it will have a good home and will not be scrapped. It has served the community well since its installation in 1992, but broke in 2018 and was not repairable.

Special recognition of appreciation to the North Ward Social club for their significant contribution, as well as local residents Lee & Reba Llewelyn, Geraldine Michalik, Andrew Sinn and Richard Klahr. The Borough is still seeking additional contributions so a GoFundMe page has been set up at https://gofund.me/1f947949 under Town Clock for the Borough of Schuylkill Haven. Checks are also welcome and can be sent directly to the Borough Hall at 333 Center Ave, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.
