Vehicle Restrictions and Speed Limits Lowered on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County

Due to the ongoing winter weather, PennDOT has announced vehicle restrictions and reduced speeds on Interstate 81.

As of 7:15am, speed limits have been lowered to 45 mph in Schuylkill County on the Interstate.

In addition to the speed restriction, vehicle restrictions are also being implemented. Vehicle restrictions reflect Tier 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan.

Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
• Tractors without trailers;
• Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers;
• Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers;
• Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV;
• Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers;
• Recreational vehicles/motorhomes;
• School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches; and
• motorcycles.

The purpose of the restriction is to help ensure the interstate remains open during the most
challenging conditions of the winter storm. When conditions improve, PennDOT will remove the travel restrictions.

The same vehicle restrictions and speed limits are being implemented on the Interstate south to the Pennsylvania State line.
