Shenandoah Man Faces Strangulation and Assault Charges

A Shenandoah man faces strangulation and assault charges after a domestic incident in the borough last week.

According to court papers, on Friday, December 8th, 2023, around 6:00pm, Shenandoah Borough Police were dispatched to a report of a domestic in the unit block of North White Street.  Dispatch was able to hear a female screaming "Stop hitting me" in the background.

Shenandoah Police Officer Mark Hysock arrived and found 63-year-old Michael Garvey and a woman still arguing on the front porch of a home.  The woman was bleeding out of her mouth.

In questioning both individuals, Hysock learned an argument turned physical.  Garvey reportedly struck the woman with the back of his hand and also threw her on top of a pool table and put his hands around her neck.  The woman was able to get free then Garvey allegedly pushed a table on top of her holding her to the ground.

Garvey was taken into custody and charged by Hysock for simple assault, strangulation, and harassment and arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge David Plachko and locked up in Schuylkill County Prison on $25,000 straight cash bail.

On Monday, December 11th, 2023, Garvey posted bail through a bondsman and was released.

Garvey is scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker on January 4th, 2023, for a Preliminary Hearing.
