A domestic disturbance on last week escalated and resulted in criminal charges against a mother and son from Ashland after they allegedly resisted arrest and interfered with law enforcement.
Angela DeAngelo, 56, and her son, Santo DeAngelo, 20, both of Ashland, are facing multiple misdemeanor charges stemming from the May 7 incident, which began as a domestic call involving family members.
According to court documents filed by Ashland Police Department, officers were dispatched to 611 Walnut Street at approximately 8:31 p.m. for a report of a domestic dispute between a father and son. Upon arrival, officers encountered Santo DeAngelo, who reported that his brother, Antonio DeAngelo, had thrown something at him and pushed their father, Ernest DeAngelo Jr., down a flight of stairs. Officers noted a visible mark on Santo's side consistent with his claims.
While investigating the situation, police became aware of an active arrest warrant for Santo DeAngelo. After confirming the warrant with Schuylkill County dispatch, officers informed Santo he was under arrest. At that point, he requested to call his mother, Angela DeAngelo.
Shortly after, Angela arrived at the scene in a vehicle and quickly approached the officers and her son. Despite repeated commands to stay back, Angela allegedly attempted to push through the officers to reach Santo, while Santo simultaneously tried to get to his mother. The officers had managed to secure one handcuff on Santo when Angela reportedly fell to the ground, began screaming, and continued to resist officers' efforts.
Santo broke free and fled down the street, still partially handcuffed. Meanwhile, Angela allegedly clung to a nearby fence, slapped at the officer's hands to prevent him from cuffing her, and attempted to flee into her home. Officers pursued her inside, where she reportedly continued to resist by sitting on her hands and refusing to comply.
Eventually, officers were able to fully detain Angela and placed her in a police cruiser. As of the incident, Santo remains charged in connection with his escape and resistance.
