The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Central Pennsylvania, including Schuylkill County, with dangerously high temperatures expected from Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, through Wednesday evening, June 25, 2025.
Forecasters warn that heat index values—what the temperature feels like when humidity is factored in—could exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit, making for potentially hazardous conditions across much of the region.
The watch covers areas east of Interstate 99 and south of Interstate 80, affecting counties including Schuylkill, Dauphin, Lebanon, Northumberland, Columbia, Union, Snyder, Perry, Cumberland, York, Lancaster, Franklin, Adams, Juniata, Mifflin, Huntingdon, Fulton, Montour, Southern Centre, Southern Clinton, and Southern Lycoming.
According to the NWS, Monday and Tuesday are expected to bring the highest risk for heat-related impacts. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat and humidity could significantly increase the chances of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Residents are strongly urged to:
- Limit outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and family.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
- Cooling centers may be opened in some communities if the forecasted heat levels remain high.
