Shenandoah Man Killed, Passenger Injured in Route 61 Collision

A crash on Route 61 in Deer Lake claimed the life of a pedestrian and left another person seriously injured Sunday afternoon.
According to Pennsylvania State Police from the Schuylkill Haven barracks, the crash occurred around 4:05 p.m. on September 14, 2025, at the intersection of Centre Turnpike (Route 61) and Market Street.

Troopers say a Subaru Outback, occupied by passenger Consuelo Barcenas of Shenandoah, was stopped in the left southbound lane with its driver outside the vehicle checking under the hood. At the same time, a Toyota Tacoma driven by Derek Musser of Landingville was traveling south in the same lane.

Musser’s vehicle struck the stopped Subaru, causing it to hit 32-year-old Eduard Barcenas-Moncada of Shenandoah, who had been outside the vehicle. Barcenas-Moncada was pronounced dead at the scene by the Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner.

Barcenas, a passenger in the Subaru, suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported by Pottsville/Schuylkill Haven Area EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Schuylkill East. Musser sustained minor injuries and refused transport after being treated on scene.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed from the scene.

Troopers noted that Barcenas-Moncada had been on the highway at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
