Fatal Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash Under Investigation on I-78 in Berks County

The Pennsylvania State Police at the Hamburg Barracks are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred late Friday morning on Interstate 78 in Berks County.
According to state police, the incident happened around 11:15 a.m. on April 10, 2026, along the eastbound lanes of I-78 near mile marker 13.3 in Bethel Township.

Troopers say a blue Volvo tractor trailer had been stopped on the eastbound shoulder. The male operator of the truck was outside the vehicle, reportedly adjusting straps on the flatbed trailer, when he was struck by another truck traveling in the right lane.

Following the collision, the striking vehicle continued eastbound on Interstate 78 and did not stop at the scene. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

Investigators believe the striking vehicle is a white truck, possibly another tractor trailer, that likely sustained heavy to moderate damage to the passenger side. Police say the vehicle is expected to be missing its passenger-side mirror and metal mirror frame.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact Trooper Zimmerman of the Pennsylvania State Police Hamburg Barracks at 610-562-6885.
