Hegins Eagle Scout Candidate Installs Flag Retirement Box for Community

Kody Rebuck, a member of Boy Scout Troop 662 and the son of Kenneth and Diana Rebuck of Hegins, has completed a community service project aimed at promoting respect for the American flag while providing a practical service to local residents.
As part of his path toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Rebuck designed and installed an American flag retirement and recycling box next to the Valley View Tri-Valley Lions Club building. The box offers a convenient and respectful location for community members to dispose of worn or damaged American flags.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, flags that are no longer suitable for display should be retired in a dignified manner, most commonly through ceremonial burning. By creating a designated collection point, Rebuck’s project helps ensure flags are handled properly and respectfully.

For the project, Rebuck oversaw all aspects of planning, construction, and installation, demonstrating leadership, organization, and a commitment to service. He worked alongside members of the Valley View Tri-Valley Lions Club and American Legion Post 575, whose support helped bring the project to completion.

Boy Scout Troop 662 will manage the collection box and coordinate the transfer of retired flags to American Legion Post 575, where they will be properly disposed of through official retirement ceremonies.

Rebuck’s project provides a lasting benefit to the community, offering residents an easy way to honor the American flag while reinforcing the importance of proper flag etiquette.
