Sean John Barnes, 21, of Drums, is charged with misdemeanor retail theft and summary harassment in connection with the August 11, 2026, incident.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Police at Schuylkill Haven, a trooper was dispatched to Boscov’s at 7211 Fairlane Village Mall in Norwegian Township around 3:15 p.m. for a report of a male being detained by store loss prevention personnel.
Police say a loss prevention officer told investigators that Barnes had been shopping in the store for several hours and had purchased numerous items before continuing to shop.
The loss prevention officer allegedly observed Barnes take several clothing items into a dressing room and conceal them inside a bag containing merchandise he had already purchased. Barnes then allegedly changed into an unpurchased shirt and began walking out of the store before loss prevention personnel stopped him and escorted him to an upstairs office. Police say additional jewelry was found concealed in his pocket.
According to the complaint, Barnes allegedly took 13 items, including 10 clothing items, a handbag, a purse and a piece of jewelry. The merchandise was valued at $360.08.
Police allege Barnes became aggressive while being held in the loss prevention office. A female loss prevention officer told police that she was standing with her back against a desk when Barnes allegedly grabbed both of her arms and kissed one of her arms.
Court records show Barnes was arraigned on August 11. Bail was set at $10,000 monetary, requiring 10 percent, and he was committed to Schuylkill County Prison after being unable to post bail.
A preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for September 1, 2026, before Magisterial District Judge Edward M. Lewis.
