SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — A Saint Clair man is facing charges after police say he failed to stop for a traffic stop and led officers on an approximately three-mile pursuit on .
Tyquan Lee Jackson, 36, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, a second-degree misdemeanor, and a summary speeding violation, according to court records.
Pursuit Began in Schuylkill Haven
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Schuylkill Haven Borough Police, the incident began at approximately 10:42 p.m. when an officer conducting traffic enforcement on Center Avenue observed a purple Mazda traveling north.
Police said the vehicle was measured traveling 48 mph in a posted 30 mph zone.
The officer followed the Mazda and attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the Cressona Mall entrance. According to the affidavit, the driver failed to yield to the officer’s emergency lights and siren.
Police allege the Mazda continued at approximately 60 mph during the pursuit. Other police departments were notified, and officers positioned themselves along the vehicle’s route.
Police Stop Vehicle in Pottsville
The pursuit ended near the intersection of Claude A. Lord Boulevard and Mauch Chunk Street in Pottsville, where an officer moved ahead of the Mazda and blocked its path. Pottsville and Saint Clair officers positioned their vehicles behind the Mazda, according to the affidavit.
Officers removed Jackson from the vehicle and took him into custody without incident, police said.
After being advised of his rights, Jackson allegedly told police he did not stop because it was too dark outside. The officer noted in the affidavit that the attempted traffic stop occurred next to a well-lit car dealership.
Jackson also allegedly told police he intended to turn into another business but missed the turn while traveling approximately 50 mph in the wrong lane.
The vehicle was towed, and Jackson was subsequently released at the scene, according to police.
Preliminary Hearing Scheduled
The criminal complaint was filed on , and a summons was issued. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for , before Magisterial District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek.
The charges are allegations. Jackson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
