Four Flown After Crash on Interstate 81 Sunday Morning

Four people were flown for serious injuries after a rollover crash on Interstate 81 Sunday morning.


According to the Pennsylvania State Police at Frackville, around 5:20am, an unidentified driver was travelling north on Interstate 81 in the area of Mile Marker 135 in Delano Township.  The driver reportedly fell asleep drifting to the right of the roadway into a rock embankment.

After striking the embankment, the vehicle rolled back across both lanes coming to a rest in a ditch on the left hand shoulder of the highway.

Three of the five occupants in the vehicle became entrapped, and were extricated by fire personnel.

Four of the five occupants were transported to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest via helicopters.

McAdoo Fire and EMS, Mahanoy Fire and EMS, Ryan Township Fire and EMS, Delano Fire, APTS Medic 11, Valley Regional Medic 26, Shenandoah ALS, Medevac 7 and 4, Life Flight 5, and Zeiner's Towing assisted at the scene.

Interstate 81 was closed for a period of time while the scene was cleared but has since reopened.

The identity of the victims or the extent of their injuries as not released.
